How to get more Google reviews the right way

Reviews help you stand out on Google Maps and Search. Here is how to ask for them, reply to them and stay inside Google's rules.

Short answer: ask every happy customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a direct review link or QR code. Reply to reviews briefly and personally. Never offer a discount, a freebie or anything else in exchange for a review. Google strictly prohibits that.

Google says reviews show next to your Business Profile on Maps and Search, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. For a small business, they also do something simpler: they answer "can I trust these people?" before the customer ever calls.

Get your review link

In your Business Profile, Google lets you create a short link or a QR code that opens the review box for your business. Save the link in your phone notes. Print the QR code on a small card for the counter, the receipt or the delivery bag.

Ask at the right moment

The best time to ask is right after a good result:

  • The hair is done and the client is smiling at the mirror
  • The car is fixed and starts first time
  • The order arrives and the customer says thanks on WhatsApp

A simple message works: "So glad you like it. If you have a minute, a Google review really helps a small business like mine." Then paste the link.

What you must not do

Google's help page is direct about this. Offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for posting, changing or removing reviews is considered fake and misleading content and is strictly prohibited. That includes "10% off if you leave 5 stars". Profiles can be restricted for policy violations.

Also avoid:

  • Writing reviews for your own business, or asking family to pretend to be customers
  • Asking only the customers you think will give 5 stars while hiding the link from others
  • Copying the same review text across customers

Reply to reviews

Google recommends replying to show customers their feedback matters. Keep replies short, polite and specific. Thank the person by name, mention what you did for them, and skip the sales pitch. Google also says to avoid using replies to push deals or promotions.

For a negative review, stay calm. Apologise where it is fair, explain what you can and cannot do, and invite the person to contact you privately to sort it out. Never share their private details. A calm, helpful reply often reassures future customers more than the complaint worries them.

A note for customers without Gmail

Google says a person needs a Google Account to leave a review, and they can create one with an email address that is not Gmail. Some customers stop at this step, so it helps to tell them it takes a minute.

Show reviews on your website

Once you have real reviews, your website can point to them. I add a "See reviews" link to your Google profile on the sites I build, so visitors can check them on Google itself, where they cannot be faked by the business.
